Dear Client,

While other animals evolve along with nature or within the framework of genetic evolution, our human brain has acquired the ability to record knowledge and experience and hand them down to future generations. This ability has enabled us to evolve at an amazing speed.  We have become "superorganisms" who are ever expanding our scientific and technological know-how, not to mention our remarkable capabilities in information technology.

Yet, today most of us are groping for a way out of the untenable situation imposed on us by the combination of declining resources and increasing demands.

Writing a prescription to succeed into the future will not necessary be easy. One thing is certain - THE key to optimizing performance in the short-term and succeeding in the long-term is innovation. Innovation is the ONLY way to DO MORE WITH LESS.

Towards a More Open You
  Catherine Mattice Retake
By Catherine Mattice, MA, Communication Consultant

Never underestimate the value of communication within relationships when it comes to innovation. Open communication between two employees, a manager and employee, or company representative and customer, can only exist when communication is truly free-flowing.

Communication is the process of creating and sharing meaning. You will always lose out on the meaning of a message if you cannot empathize with the person talking, no matter what the situation. You cannot be sure the meaning you assign a message is accurate unless you clarify. Your own mind can keep you from taking in what someone has to say. Opening up to others will encourage them to open up to you, but only if it is anticipated that your response will be supportive and affectionate.

Here are five tips to help you become an open-to-new-ideas communicator.

Focus on empathy

The basis of any relationship whether with a co-worker or a husband or wife is the experience of "we" rather than "I" or "you." When we feel understood, we feel less stressed, closer to our communication partners, and more inclined to return the favor and be empathetic right back. Empathy is putting yourself in someone else's shoes, looking at the world through his or her eyes, and truly understanding the other person's underlying feelings and emotions.

You can become more empathetic by paying closer attention to what the other person is saying. Make the conscious choice to give your attention over and listen to what is being said. Empathy is the process of discovery, and this unearthing only comes when you really listen.

What if We Could GoInnovate! Government?
Rudy PlatzerBy Rudy Platzer, BS, MA

The Secretary of the Treasury came up with a plan to avert a national economic crisis.  The president endorsed it and asserted that it must be adopted immediately.  Certain Members of Congress objected, some because they did not like the plan and some because they had ideas that had not been considered.  A fight broke out on Capitol Hill.

What if a meeting had been held prior to the development of the plan and the stakeholders had all agreed on the purpose of the legislation?  Deliberating on the desired Ideal State would have given all parties an opportunity to articulate the key issues and concerns involved.

What if they had Measured the Gaps and agreed on how we would know if the legislation was actually successful?  The results could determine whether more action was needed and would obviate partisan posturing.

What if they had collectively agreed upon the Strategies needed to Close the Gaps?  Special interests and pork barreling would not be issues; the focus would be on getting results.

What if the Congress and the Administration were able to assign Projects based upon those Strategies? And now, with the clear understanding of what each was to accomplish and when, they could spend their energy actually accomplishing something!

What if they were able to Orchestrate development of this package in a timely manner without putting everything else on hold?  Merely saying that a difficult job needs to be done now does not really help get it done.

What if the time they spent going backwards had been done up-front?  The slow-down was so predictable!  People who should be involved in policy or projects will always demand more information and an opportunity to air their views and help construct the solution.  Time was wasted, tempers flared, people became rigid and inflexible and chaos reigned.  Remember, if you really want something "bad" that is likely what you will get.  We deserve better from our elected officials! GoInnovate! thinking could have helped.

The Practice Of Expert Sourcing Will Organize The Way The World Innovates
Forrester (September 29, 2008) - Corporate use of innovation networks is rapidly expanding as many fast followers adopt them. The result? Organizations are now managing diversified portfolios of innovation sources that include not only in-house engineers and product managers but also external customers, suppliers, partners, and investors. It's now time to add expert sourcing to the portfolio of innovation sources.

Innovation Leaders Invest 3 Times as Much Effort in Early Stages of the Innovation Process
MarketWire (September 29, 2008) - Companies that are the most successful innovators have a clear focus on a robust innovation strategy in addition to opening the innovation process to parties outside the company. This allows these leading companies to improve the success rate of new products and services, reduce spending on R&D, and increase profitability. These were the key findings from the A.T. Kearney Innovation Management Survey, a global survey of 250 companies that identifies best practices in the overall management of the innovation process.

 The Listening Log

Keep track of your listening habits for one week. It should include examples of when you were a good listener, and when you were a poor listener.

After logging your listening for a week, respond to the following questions:
  1. What motivates you to listen? When did you find yourself actively listening? When did you find yourself wandering off?
  2. What were the situations and factors that allowed you to be a good listener?
  3. What challenges did you face when trying to be a good listener?
  4. In what situations did you feel less than competent in listening?
  5. After observing and reflecting upon your listening habits, what skills would you like to improve?

Now design an action plan with real goals and timelines for how you will achieve this improvement.
